Parental and Caregiver Protections Added by an Amendment to HB 7
On Monday, May 8th, Representative Stephanie Klick (R), introduced an amendment to HB 7, a bill relating to child protective services suits, motions, and services by the Department of Family and Protective Services. Her amendment was written to make the parental/caregiver protection explicit for those using low-THC cannabis under the Texas Compassionate Use Program.
Representative Jason Isaac (R), offered an additional amendment to Klick’s amendment from the floor. His amendment builds upon Kilck’s protection and gives more guidance regarding medical cannabis with THC given to children. The amendment passed and was added to the bill but only will be enacted if HB 2107 passes.
HB 7 has passed out of the House and is on it’s way to the Senate.
Parents should never have to wonder if helping their kids could place them at risk of losing parenting rights. We are very thankful that this protection has been codified for parents and caregivers across Texas.
