Changing laws in Texas

July 28, 2013 pbezant News

Strategy in talking to the “opposition” and outside of the choir:
Inquire about their position and specific concerns and educate no matter the audience.

We don’t have to convince that marijuana is good, to show that prohibition is bad.

Target districts of legislators in Criminal Jurisprudence, Public Health and Calendars Committees. You can view these Committees, their members, and the area that each member represents using the legislature’s site!

Texas NORML will put together a Voter Guide again next year and update the Education Package we previously distributed to state lawmakers.

  • No changes to drug laws on a local level – HB2213 passed in 1997

  • Cannot collect signatures to get anything on the state ballot, must go through legislature

  • Cite and release law is more than just a “ticket” – really a summons to appear and face the same charges – HB2391 passed in 2007

Texas Legislature Online – http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/

  • Research legislators (bills authored/supported, biography, committees, etc.)

  • Read about how bills become laws

  • Research past bills (video, witness lists, history)

  • Create account to watch bills and get alerts

  • Navigating the Capitol and grounds
