HB 902 Scheduled for Public Hearing on April 8th

April 6, 2009 TexasNORML Call to Action

HB 902, the decriminalization bill introduced by Rep. Dutton, has been scheduled for a hearing this Wednesday, April 8th. If you are interested in sharing your testimony with the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, please take some time today and tomorrow to put your opinions on this bill into words.

The hearing is scheduled for 2 pm in room E-2028 in our State Capitol Building. Metered parking spots are available near The Capitol, but are limited to a 2 hour maximum. The Capitol Visitors Parking Garage is located at 1201 San Jacinto. Click HERE for more info on parking.

Please make plans to arrive early and stay late, if necessary.

Remember, HB 902 would reduce the penalty of possession of under ONE OUNCE to a class C misdemeanor. The penalty for 1-2 ounces would remain the same. The bill also addresses issues regarding occupational driver’s licenses. read the full text of the bill HERE.

The Texas Legislature only meets for 140 days every other year. Similar bills have been introduced over the last few sessions, with no success. Please help us ensure that this bill receives the attention it deserves by attending this hearing and offering your testimony.

There are several reasons one might have for supporting this bill.

Perhaps it is the financial burden of jailing non-violent offenders, which lies squarely on the shoulders of the tax payers that bothers you.

Perhaps you yourself have been a victim of “the war on some drugs,” and you would like to breathe easier, knowing that you would face no jail time, if convicted of cannabis possession charges in the future.

Perhaps you are a teacher, mother or father of a college student, with an affinity to this God-given herb.
Your testimony may have more of an impact on this committee. If this bill passes, your student would not be considered a CRIMINAL.

Perhaps you are a seriously ill patient in need of safe access to medical cannabis without fear of imprisonment. Please share your story with legislators.

Perhaps you are a Sheriff, police chief, or police officer eager to serve and protect. We know that you couldn’t possibly enjoy jailing people for this safer alternative to alcohol, but your orders come down from the top and we understand. Come testify at the hearing, and perhaps you may be able to get around to some real police work very soon.

No matter your reasons for supporting this bill, organize your thoughts, take off of work and show up to this hearing. Dust off your Sunday best and join us on Wednesday at The Capitol. You do not need to schedule an appointment, just BE THERE! You will need complete a witness affirmation form stating your position (for/against) the bill. These forms will be available at the hearing.

See you there!
